Clipper Windpower Plans Development of 7.5 MW Wind Turbine for Offshore Sites
LCG, October 10, 2007--Clipper Windpower announced Monday that it will develop an offshore wind turbine with a generating capacity of 7.5 MW. The new wind turbine will be the largest in the world and will be a significant step up from Clipper's Liberty wind turbine, which has a capacity of 2.5 MW.
Known as the "Britannia Project," Clipper created a Centre of Excellence for Offshore Wind in Blyth, United Kingdom. The project will utilize the Blyth-based New and Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC) and its engineering and test laboratory. NaREC was founded in 2002 as a Centre for Excellence for research and development of renewable energy technologies designed to address climate change concerns.
According to Clipper, engineering for the project will be shared between Clipper's Advanced Technology Group, based in Carpinteria, California, and Clipper operations in Blyth. One NorthEast, the Regional Development Agency for the North East of England, will provide funding to support the project. Clipper currently manufactures its 2.5-MW Liberty wind turbine at its assembly facility located in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Currently, the largest wind turbine is a 6 MW turbine manufactured by ENERCON. Two of these E-126 6 MW models are being installed in Emden, Germany. The towers will be 131 meters tall and include 36 concrete segments, and the total height will be 198 meters - roughly the length of two soccer fields or slightly taller than the Washington Monument.
