SPP's Western Expansion Set for Implementation on April 1

LCG, March 13, 2026--The Southwest Power Pool (SPP) announced yesterday that leaders from the participating organizations voted unanimously to proceed as planned with expanding its regional transmission organization (RTO) services into the Western Interconnection. SPP sees the decision to proceed as planned as a strong signal of confidence as SPP and its partner utilities prepare for this key milestone, which will occur overnight between March 31 and April 1.

Entergy Estimates Customer Savings of $5B from "Fair Share Plus" Data Center Agreements

LCG, March 6, 2026--Entergy yesterday announced approximately $5 billion in total savings for 2.3 million customers in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi resulting from data center customer agreements in those states. Entergy, which completed its first data center customer agreement in 2024, projects the customer savings over the next 20 years and after the regulatory approval or acknowledgement of the public service commissions in those states.

TVA Awards Bechtel Contract for Second Reactor at Watts Bar

LCG, October 16, 2007--The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) Board yesterday announced the selection of Bechtel Power Corp. for a $1 billion construction and engineering contract to complete a second nuclear reactor at TVA's Watts Bar nuclear station in Tennessee.

The estimated cost to complete the 1,180-MW nuclear unit is $2.5 billion, and the unit is scheduled to commence operations by 2013.

Prior to being awarded the contract, Bechtel led a $20 million cost-and-scheduling study used by TVA to support completing the Watts Bar Unit 2 reactor.

In August 2007, the TVA Board approved plans to complete the second unit at Watts Bar Nuclear Plant in Spring City, Tennessee. The additional capacity will help serve the growing demand for electricity without increasing carbon emissions.
Watts Bar Unit 1 began operating in 1996, and Unit 2 will use the same pressurized water reactor design as Unit 1.

Prior to pursing the completion of Watts Bar Unit 2, TVA completed the refurbishment of Browns Ferry Unit 1 in May 2007. The reactivation of Unit 1, mothballed over 20 years, added 1,200 MW of carbon-free electric generating capacity to TVA's fleet.

Browns Ferry Unit 1 originally commenced commercial operation on August 1, 1974, but safety concerns following a fire led to its closure in 1985. Units 2 and 3 were also closed for a period but returned to operations in the late 1990s. All three reactors are now generating power, and the total plant capacity is approximately 3,600 MW.
