Exelon Files for License Extension at Three Mile Island
LCG, January 9, 2008--Amergen, a unit of Exelon Corporation, announced yesterday that it has filed an application with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a 20-year extension of the operating license for Three Mile Island Unit 1 nuclear generating station, located near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.
Three Mile Island Unit 1 began commercial operation in 1974, and the current license will expire in April 2014. The existing unit is pressurized water reactor and has an electric generating capacity of 852 MW.
The NRC has approved license renewal applications for 48 generating stations and 38 other license renewal applications are pending or have been announced. Amergen anticipates that the NRC will review the application over 22 to 30 months.
Unit 2 was shut down following a core meltdown accident in 1979. The accident is considered the most serious accident in U.S. nuclear industry history.
Amergen acquired Three Mile Island in December 1999. According to AmerGen, the company has invested over $100 million in plant upgrades and plans to invest another $300 million during the fall 2009 refueling outage to replace two steam generators.
