Presidential Permit Issued for Montana Alberta Tie Ltd. Project
LCG, November 18, 2008-- Tonbridge Power Inc. yesterday announced that the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE) published its Record of Decision to issue a Presidential Permit for the proposed Montana Alberta Tie Ltd. (MATL) transmission line project that will provide the first, direct link from Alberta to electricity markets in the United States.
The Presidential Permit allows MATL to construct, operate, maintain and connect a single-circuit, 230-kV electric transmission line along the preferred alternative route identified in the EIS. According to Tonbridge, the Presidential Permit is the last and final regulatory approval required by MATL to build the power transmission line.
The international line will extend northward from an existing NorthWestern Energy (NWE) 230-kV switchyard at Great Falls, Montana to a new substation to be constructed northeast of Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. The new line is expected to enhance the development of wind farms along its route. Approximately 130 miles of the 203-mile long transmission line will be built in the United States.
When the project is complete, the line will have a bidirectional path rating of 300 MW. Two "Open Season" capacity auctions occurred for this merchant power transmission project, and 300 MW of northbound and 300 MW of southbound capacity were awarded. The line has a physical capacity of 650 MW to enable future capacity upgrades.
Tonbridge Power is the 100% controlling shareholder of the project.
