NRC Accepts Application for New Nuclear Reactor in Michigan

LCG, December 2, 2008--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) announced on November 25 that it has docketed, or accepted for review, a combined operating license (COL) application submitted by Detroit Edison to construct and operate a new nuclear reactor at the Fermi site in Michigan. The application was submitted September 18, 2008.

Detroit Edison proposes to use the GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR) design which employs passive safety features that rely upon natural forces, such as gravity, in order to reduce reliance on active, mechanical systems, like pumps and valves.

Applications to use the GEH ESBWR have been submitted to the NRC by others. In November2007, Dominion filed its application with the NRC for a COL to add a third nuclear reactor at the North Anna Power Station in Virginia.

Entergy Operations, Inc. (EOI) submitted an application with the NRC for a COL to add a third (ESBWR) reactor at Grand Gulf site near Port Gibson in Claiborne County, Mississippi on February 27, 2008, and EOI submitted another COL to add a unit at the River Bend Station in Louisiana On September 25, 2008.

On September 3, 2008, Exelon Nuclear Texas Holdings, LLC (Exelon) filed an application with the NRC for a COL for two ESBWRs to be located in Texas and designated as Victoria County Station, Units 1 and 2.
