Progress Energy Executes Contract for New Nuclear Station

LCG, January 6, 2009--Progress Energy yesterday announced that it signed a $7.65 billion contract for two planned nuclear reactors to be constructed at a greenfield site in Levy County near Crystal River, Florida. The contract scope includes nuclear engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) by Westinghouse Electric and The Shaw Group. The total cost of the nuclear power station is estimated to be over $17 billion.

Progress Energy Florida, a subsidiary of Progress Energy, plans to install two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors that each have a nominal electric generating capacity of 1,100 MW. The AP1000 design incorporates passive safety features that rely upon natural forces and was certified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 2006. The NRC is now reviewing a Westinghouse application, submitted in May 2007, to amend the certified design.

In April 2008, Progress Energy announced that it had executed a letter of intent with Westinghouse Electric and The Shaw Group Inc. to purchase long-lead materials for the nuclear reactors.

In July the Florida Public Service Commission approved the proposal submitted in March by Progress Energy Florida for a determination of need to build the two reactors, with the first reactor scheduled to be operational in 2016, and the second reactor in the following year.

On October 6, 2008, the NRC accepted for review, a combined construction and operating license (COL) application submitted in July by Progress Energy Florida for the new nuclear station in Florida.
