California PUC Issues Renewables Report

LCG, February 20, 2009--The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) earlier this week issued its first quarter report stating that more than 500 MW of new renewable generating capacity completed construction in 2008, which represents 60% of the total renewable capacity installed since 2003.

The additional renewable generation brings the total eligible Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) capacity to nearly 900 MW. The CPUC approved 111 power purchase agreements representing over 2,800 MW of generating capacity that were presented by the investor owned utilities (IOUs), Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), Southern California Edison (SCE), and San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E). Projects approved included solar, wind, biogas and biomass.

The renewable energy targets set in the California RPS for the IOUs are 20 percent of retail sales in 2010 and 33 percent in 2020.
