Exelon Selects GE-Hitachi's ABWR for New Texas Nuclear Station

LCG, March 27, 2009--Exelon has selected the GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy (GEH) Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) for a new nuclear power plant proposed in Texas. Exelon's plans now call for installing two, 1,350-MW units at the new power station.

Exelon had originally selected the GEH Economic Simplified Boiling Water Reactor (ESBWR). On September 3, 2008, Exelon Nuclear Texas Holdings, LLC filed an application with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) for a Construction and Operating License (COL) for two ESBWRs in Texas designated as Victoria County Station, Units 1 and 2. Exelon will need to update its COL application to reflect the new design.

The ESBWR is a more advanced design than the ABWR and employs passive safety features that rely upon natural forces, such as gravity, to reduce reliance on active, mechanical systems, like pumps and valves. However, the ESBWR has not been built, although applications have been submitted to the NRC by Dominion, Detroit Edison and Entergy.

The ABWR has design certification and five units are currently operating in Japan. The change to the ABWR is expected to result in a shorter approval process and greater likelihood of qualifying for federal loan guarantees.
