LCG, October 5, 2026--The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Energy Dominance Financing (EDF) today announced a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion to finance nuclear uprates and modernization across Vistra’s nuclear fleet in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The projects are expected to preserve nearly 4 GW of carbon-free, baseload power and add 433 MW of new nuclear capacity that will support the growing electricity demand across the PJM region.

FirstEnergy Announces Plans to Convert Plant from Burning Coal to Biomass
LCG, April 3, 2009--FirstEnergy Corp. announced Wednesday its plan to convert two coal-fired units to burn biomass for power generation at the R.E. Burger Plant in Ohio. The conversion plan stems from a Consent Decree related to FirstEnergy's 2005 New Source Review settlement that allows the power plant to burn coal only through the end of the year 2012.
The plan targets converting units 4 and 5 to burn biomass. The combined output of the two units is estimated to be 312 MW when the repowering is complete, which is consistent with the current capacity. The estimated capital cost for retrofitting the units is $200 million.
The R.E. Burger Plant will be one of the largest biomass facilities in the United States. FirstEnergy has a biomass supply agreement with Renewafuel LLC that relies upon dry, biomass briquettes. Typically, biomass facilities use green, woody biomass, which contains roughly 50% moisture, as a fuel. Renewafuel's supply plans include the use of fast-growing trees, like poplars and cottonwoods, as an energy crop.
Last year, the State of Ohio approved legislation that requires 25 percent of Ohio's energy be supplied from advanced and renewable energy sources by 2025.
