Albiasa Proposes 200-MW Solar Project in Arizona

LCG, April 22, 2009--Albiasa Solar, a Spanish company, Monday announced plans to construct a 200-MW solar electric generating system in northwest Arizona. The estimated project cost is $1 billion, and the project could be completed by 2013.

The facility will employ a concentrated solar design, which reflects the solar energy with mirrors on tubes filled with liquid. The heated liquid is used to create steam that drives steam turbines.

The project will include a thermal storage system of molten salt to provide energy for power generation when direct solar energy is inadequate, thereby increasing the dispatchability of the plant. The project will be developed at a 1,400-acre site near Kingman, Arizona.

An Albiasa spokesperson stated that the company is discussing the project with utilities in Arizona and other states.

Albiasa has U.S. offices in San Francisco, California and Phoenix, Arizona.
