Governor Approves Sunflower's Proposed Coal-fired Plant in Kansas
LCG, May 20, 2009--The new Governor of Kansas, Mark Parkinson, approved on Monday an agreeement that includes a coal-fired, electric generating unit proposed by Sunflower Electric Power Corporation (Sunflower).
The approval permits the construction of a single, 895-MW unit at an existing power plant near Holcolm, Kansas. The approval follows a settlement negotiation that resulted in a single, 895-MW unit, rather than two, 700-MW units.
Governor Parkinson recently replaced Kathleen Sebelius, who became U.S. Secretary for Health and Human Services. While governor, Ms. Sebelius denied an air quality permit for Sunflower's proposed coal-fired unit and vetoed three measures submitted by the Legislature to overturn the decision to reject the permit.
The Kansas Legislature adjourned the 2009 session last week with an energy plan that included Sunflower's 895-MW, coal-fired unit.
