Santee Cooper Suspends Development of Coal-fired Power Plant in South Carolina

LCG, August 25, 2009--The board of Santee Cooper, South Carolina's state-owned electric and water utility, yesterday voted unanimously to suspend efforts to construct a 600-MW, coal-fired electric generating station in Florence County, South Carolina.

Santee Cooper identified three, primary reasons for discontinuing its efforts towards building the Pee Dee Energy Campus. First, the recession has reduced overall demand for electricity. Second, proposed federal government regulations regarding carbon emissions would significantly increase the operating costs of the coal-fired power plant. Third, Central Electric Power Cooperative, Santee Cooper's largest customer, plans to gradually reduce its reliance on using power supplied by Santee Cooper beginning in 2013.

The Pee Dee Energy Campus was scheduled to commence operations in 2012.
