FPL Commissions DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center

LCG, October 28, 2009--FPL Group and Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) officials yesterday commissioned the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center. The 25-MW project is now the largest photovoltaic (PV) solar facility operating in the United States. FPL began construction on the project in late February of this year.

The DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center employs over 90,000 SunPower PV panels that incorporate the SunPower Tracker technology, which moves the panels so as to follow the sun throughout the day and increase the solar energy converted to power. FPL stated that the $150 million total project cost will represent an average of only 6 cents on a typical customer?s monthly bill over the lifetime of the plant.

FPL is now pursuing the necessary approvals to expand the capacity of the DeSoto Next Generation Solar Energy Center up to 300 MW.

Construction activities are also underway on a similar project, the Space Coast Next Generation Solar Energy Center, located at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The 10-MW, solar PV power project is a public-private partnership between FPL and NASA and will use approximately 35,000 solar PV panels installed over 60 acres. FPL has completed a 1 MW array for use by NASA at the location.
