Maryland Selects Constellation Energy for Solar PV Project
LCG, December 9, 2009--The State of Maryland selected Constellation Energy to develop a 15.9 MW DC solar photovoltaic (PV) facility under the state's Generating Clean Horizons initiative. The power generated from the facility will be purchased by the state under a 20-year, power purchase agreement (PPA). The project is scheduled for completion by December 2012.
Constellation Energy will build, own and operate the facility, which will be developed on approximately 100 acres of land leased from Mount St. Mary's University in Emmitsburg, Maryland. The project will employ thin-film, solar PV panels and will represent the majority of a $60 million, 17.1 MW DC solar facility. The PPA also calls for Mount St. Mary's University to purchase 1.2 MW of electric capacity from the system.
In February 2009, Governor Martin O'Malley, in partnership with the University of Maryland, announced "Generating Clean Horizons" to incent the development of large-scale, renewable energy projects in Maryland and issued a request for proposals (RFP) offering long-term PPA's to renewable energy developers.
