We Energies' Oak Creek Project Commences Commercial Operation

LCG, February 10, 2010--We Energies announced that commercial operations of Unit 1 of the Oak Creek project commenced last week. We Power LLC, a subsidiary of Wisconsin Energy, owns the 615-MW, coal-fired unit and is leasing the output to We Energies, which is responsible for plant operation and maintenance.

The Oak Creek Project includes a second, 615-MW, supercritical pulverized coal unit that is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter. MG&E and WPPI Energy are partners in the project and own 200 MW of capacity of the two units.

We Energies overcame a number of hurdles in order to complete the project. The application was filed with the Public Service Commission of Wisconsin (PSCW) for approval to build the project in February 2002, and the PSCW approved the project in November 2003. In November 2004, the Dane County Circuit Judge ruled that the WPSC's approval violated state statutes and that the WPSC must restart the approval process. Project construction began on June 29, 2005, a day after the State Supreme Court reversed the Circuit Court's decision.
