Commercial Operations Commence for 50 MW Parabolic Trough Solar Project
LCG, May 5, 2010--Abengoa Solar announced today that commercial operations have commenced for Solnova 1, a concentrating solar power (CSP) project that employs the Abengoa Solar-developed ASTRØ parabolic trough collector. Solnova 1 is the first of five plants to begin construction.
The massive Solnova 1 project is located in Spain at the Solúcar Platform. The project includes approximately 980,000 square feet of mirrored, trough collectors over an area totaling about 280 acres.
The trough collectors focus solar energy onto a tube circulating a synthetic heat transfer oil, which is heated to 395 degrees C. The heated oil is used to generate superheated, high pressure steam that is delivered to a steam turbine, which powers an electrical generator, creating electricity.
Commercial operations followed a successful, three-day test during which plant performance matched theoretical electrical power generation design.
The CEO of Abengoa Solar stated, "Our technological progress and accumulative expertise have enabled us to reach our goals much sooner than we had anticipated. We will use this experience in the two 280 MW CSP plants planned for the United States in Arizona and California."
