APS Signs PPA with NextEra for Power from Perrin Ranch Wind Energy Center
LCG, July 29, 2010--Arizona Public Service Company (APS) and NextEra Energy Resources have executed a 25-year, power purchase agreement (PPA) for APS to buy all of power generated from NextEra's planned Perrin Ranch Wind Energy Center, located in Coconino County, Arizona.
The 99.2-MW project will consist of 62, 1.6-MW wind turbines. Construction is scheduled to commence next year, and the project is expected to deliver power to the grid in 2012. This schedule is contingent upon receiving necessary permitting. In addition, the PPA must be approved by the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC).
In 2006, the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) adopted rules setting Arizona's Renewable Energy Standard (RES) to 15 percent by 2025, with 30 percent of the renewable energy to be derived from distributed energy technologies. Investor-owned utilities (like APS) and electric power cooperatives serving retail customers in Arizona must meet this target. The RES target in 2012 is 3.5 percent.
Arizona's first commercial-scale wind farm, the Dry Lake Wind Power Project, was dedicated in October 2009. The 63-MW project was developed by Iberdrola Renewables, and Salt River Project (SRP) signed a PPA for all of the power output. The project includes 30 Suzlon S88-2.1 MW wind turbines.
