Entergy to Join Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO)
LCG, April 26, 2011--Entergy Corporation announced yesterday that it plans to join the Midwest Independent System Operator (MISO) in order to achieve long-term benefits for the customers of the Entergy operating companies. Entergy's operating companies will submit reports to their retail regulators supporting the decision on or before May 12 and target implementation for joining MISO by the end of 2013.
The Entergy operating companies are Entergy Arkansas, Inc., Entergy Gulf States Louisiana, L.L.C., Entergy Louisiana, LLC, Entergy Mississippi, Inc., Entergy New Orleans, Inc., and Entergy Texas, Inc. Entergy delivers electricity to 2.7 million utility customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
The addition of Entergy companies to the MISO, the Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) that manages and operates the transmission system in thirteen Midwestern states, will extend the MISO's footprint from the Canadian Border south to the Gulf of Mexico.
For years Entergy has evaluated joining either the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) or the MISO. Entergy stated that one of the advantages of joining MISO is joining an existing "Day 2" market with a centralized market-driven dispatch process.
Entergy's chairman and chief executive officer stated, "The analysis clearly shows there are compelling benefits to joining a regional transmission organization with substantial scale and a Day 2 market. An organized market design based upon centralized auction markets creates greater efficiencies than one that relies upon bilateral trading, particularly in electricity markets where some congestion is always present. We look forward to discussing in detail the benefits of joining MISO with regulators, their staffs and other stakeholders in the months ahead. As the analysis showed, MISO's substantial scale and established market made it the clear choice for customer benefits."
