Duke Energy Renewables Expands Its Wind Portfolio
LCG, July 7, 2011--Duke Energy announced yesterday that its subsidiary, Duke Energy Renewables, will build, own and operate the 131-MW Cimarron II Windpower Project in Kansas. The fully developed and contracted wind power project will be acquired from CPV Renewable Energy Company. CPV will continue to own the first phase of the wind project, Cimarron I, a 165-MW project from which the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) will purchase the output. All of the power output and associated renewable energy credits (RECs) from the Cimarron II Windpower Project will be purchased by Kansas City Power & Light under a 20-year, power purchase agreement (PPA). Construction of the Cimarron II Windpower Project is scheduled to commence this fall, with commercial operations expected to begin by June 2012. The wind farm will be built at a site approximately 200 miles west of Wichita on 16,000 acres of leased farmland.
Duke Energy Renewables is growing rapidly, with four wind farms in Wyoming, three in Texas, one in Colorado and one in Pennsylvania. In May, Duke Energy Renewables announced plans to build the 168-MW Ironwood Windpower Project in Ford County, Kansas, and a new agreement to acquire the 20-MW Shirley Windpower Project in Glenmore, Wisconsin.
The President of Duke Energy Renewables stated, "In just the last month, Duke Energy has announced plans to add three more wind farms to its commercial portfolio of renewable energy assets. These projects will bring Duke Energy's wind-generated capacity to approximately 1,300 megawatts."
