Iberdrola's Tule Wind Power Project Approved by Interior Department
LCG, December 21, 2011--The Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar Tuesday approved the Tule Wind Power Project under development by Iberdrola Renewables. The project must also be approved by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC), Bureau of Indian Affairs, California State Lands Commission and County of San Diego.
The Tule Wind Power Project is located about 70 miles east of San Diego, California in the McCain Valley. The federal lands portion of the project was approved for 62 wind turbines, with a capacity of up to 186 MW. Additional development is planned that could provide for up to 200 MW, pending county and state approvals.
Iberdrola Renewables' spokesperson stated, "The County of San Diego will be holding hearings on our Major Use Permit application in the first quarter of 2012. The Planning Commission, then likely the San Diego County Board of Supervisors, will be voting on whether this project will be allowed to proceed."
The Department of the Interior selected an alternative plan that reduced the turbines from 128 turbines to 62 in an effort to avoid biological, cultural and hydrological resources.
