SoCalGas Demonstrates Advanced Solar Cogeneration System
LCG, May 23, 2012--Southern California Gas Co. (SoCalGas) announced that it has initiated a multi-year demonstration of an advanced solar cogeneration system that incorporates concentrated solar photovoltaic (PV) cells. The design, manufactured by Cogenra SolarĀ®, offers the potential for increased efficiency in converting solar energy into both electricity and hot water.
The modular design integrates advanced silicon PV cells, concentrating mirrors with single-axis tracking, and a thermal transfer system to cool the PV cells. The cooler operating temperature for the PV cells increases cell efficiency - and the "waste" heat is used to heat water. A system is now installed at SoCalGas' Energy Resource Center in Downey, California.
SoCalGas Vice President of Customer Solutions stated, "We are excited about the potential of this advanced solar cogeneration system to provide costs savings, sustainable energy and lead to the creation of green jobs. This project will showcase new solar technology and provide a renewable resource for our customers, which contributes to California's renewable energy goals. The start-up of Cogenra's system on the roof has been surprisingly simple and easy due to its modular plug & play design."
The integrated design is modular and small enough in scale to be installed on commercial and industrial building rooftops. Given greater efficiencies, the design requires less space than traditional flat-panel PV systems, plus it delivers hot water.
