Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center Commences Commercial Operations
LCG, July 12, 2012--Dominion Virginia Power, a subsidiary of Dominion, announced that it has initiated commercial operations of its Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center in Wise County. Construction on the $1.8 billion electric generating facility began in June 2008. The Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center includes two circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boilers designed to burn coal, waste coal and up to approximately 20 percent biomass (wood chips). The use of biomass will help Dominion meet its commitment to have 15 percent of its electricity come from renewable sources by 2025. The estimated cost of the 585-MW project is $1.8 billion.
Dominion Virginia Power is actively rebuilding its power generation fleet with a greater reliance on natural gas and less on coal. On May 31, 2012, construction began at the Warren County Power Station, which was approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission in February. The station will be fueled by natural gas and incorporate three combustion turbines and a steam turbine, with a station generating capacity of 1,329 MW. Commercial operation is scheduled for late 2014 or early 2015. As part of its air permit negotiations, Dominion will mitigate potential impacts on the Shenandoah National Park by agreeing to close the North Branch Power Station, a 74-MW, coal-fired power station in West Virginia that began commercial operation in 1992.
Dominion Virginia Power also announced in February that it proposes to invest over $1 billion to build the Brunswick County Power Station, a combined-cycle, natural gas-fired power station in Brunswick County, Virginia. Like the Warren County facility, the generating capacity would be over 1,300 MW, and the operational date would be by the summer of 2016. Power generated from the proposed facility would replace that otherwise generated by coal units at two eastern Virginia stations that are planned to be retired rather than retrofitted with additional emission controls needed to meet regulatory requirements.
