Ontario Power Generation Plans to Convert Coal Plant to Biomass
LCG, July 25, 2012--Ontario Power Generation (OPG) recently announced plans to proceed with converting the 211-MW Atikokan Generating Station from coal to renewable biomass fuel. The $170-million conversion project is scheduled to be complete in 2014.
The Ontario provincial government, as part of its clean energy plan, committed to stop burning coal in electric generating stations by the end of 2014 in order to reduce emissions, including greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The Atikokan Generating Station, located in northwestern Ontario, will be one of the largest biomass plants in North America. The renewable energy facility will consume wood pellets made from sawmill residues and other low-value biomass from Ontario's forests. The fuel conversion project will include a new fuel storage and handling system, plus modifications to the combustion system, as the unit will consume only biomass. The unit previously burned low-sulphur lignite coal.
