Los Angeles Mayor Approves Agreements for 460-MW of Solar Capacity
LCG, December 07, 2012--The Mayor of Los Angeles yesterday approved two long-term power purchasing agreements (PPAs) of the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) that have a combined electric generating capacity of 460 MW.
The mayor stated that Los Angeles is committed to developing 33 percent of its power as renewable or clean within 8 years and further stated, "It is high time Los Angeles kicked its addiction to dirty coal energy."
One PPA is with KRoad Power LLC for generation from the planned, 250-MW Moapa Solar Energy Center, located approximately 25 miles north of Las Vegas. The roughly 2,000-acre site is on Moapa Paiutes tribal land, and the project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2015. The project will use solar PV. The Record of Decision for the Final Environmental Impact Statement was issued in June 2012.
The other agreement is with Sempra Energy (SRE) for power generated from the 210-MW Copper Mountain Solar 3 project in Boulder City, Nevada. The initial phase, Copper Mountain Solar 1, commenced operations in late 2010. Construction of Copper Mountain Solar 2 began a year ago. The third and largest phase, Solar 3, is scheduled for completion in 2015.
