Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission Approves Bruce Power Request
LCG, May 30, 2013--The Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) approved the request from Bruce Power to increase Unit 1 at Bruce A Nuclear Generating Station above 50 percent of its generating capacity. This milestone is the last prior to returning the unit to full operation.
The CNSC authorized Bruce Power to restart Unit 1 up to 50 percent power for safety evaluations last July.
CNSC's executive vice-president and chief regulatory operations officer stated, "Bruce Power has successfully completed all safety tests and has met CNSC regulatory requirements to bring Unit 1 to full power. Our oversight of the unit?s operation will continue through normal compliance activities, marking the end of regulatory activities specific to reactor decommissioning."
Bruce Power operates two generating stations (Bruce A & B) with each station housing four nuclear reactors. In the mid 1990?s, the four units in Bruce A were laid up. On October 7, 2003, Unit 4 was returned to service, followed by Unit 3 in January 2004. With Ontario's desire to phase out coal-fired electric generation, the remaining two, 750-MW units were recently refurbished; Unit 1 synchronized to the grid on September 19, 2012 and Unit 2 on October 16, 2012.
The Bruce Power partnership consists of Borealis Infrastructure, Cameco Corporation, The Power Workers? Union, The Society of Energy Professionals and TransCanada Corporation. TransCanada owns 49 per cent of Bruce A and 32 per cent of Bruce B. Bruce Power operates the Bruce A and Bruce B nuclear power stations.
