New Mexico Public Regulatory Commission Approves PPA for 50-MW Solar Project
LCG, June 7, 2013--First Solar, Inc. announced yesterday that the New Mexico Public Regulatory Commission approved a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) between First Solar and El Paso Electric Company for the entire power output from the proposed Macho Springs Solar Power Plant to be located on State Trust Land in Luna County.
First Solar stated that it has submitted its final development plan and is obtaining various construction permits. The project will operate on a commercial lease from the State Land Office on about 500 acres of land near Deming. First Solar also has an interconnection agreement with El Paso Electric. Given timely permit approvals, First Solar expects construction on the 50-MW project will commence next month.
El Paso Electric's Chief Executive Officer stated, "We look forward to working with First Solar on this historic and very important renewable energy project that will benefit all El Paso Electric customers and the region. We're grateful the New Mexico State Land Commissioner shares our commitment to renewable energy."
New Mexico's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requires investor-owned utilities to increase procurement from eligible renewable energy resources to 20 percent of total retail sales by the end of 2020.
First Solar acquired the Macho Springs solar project from Element Power Solar earlier this year. In April, First Solar, Inc. announced the sale of its Campo Verde Solar Project to Southern Power (a subsidiary of Southern Company) and Turner Renewable Energy. The Campo Verde Solar Project is a 139-MW project located in Imperial County, California.
