Samsung to Test 7-MW Offshore Wind Turbine at U.K. Test Center
LCG, June 20, 2013--Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) will test the drivetrain for its 7 MW offshore wind turbine at at the United Kingdom's new National Renewable Energy Centre (Narec), which includes test facilities specifically designed for the next generation of offshore wind turbines.
The U.K.'s Business and Energy Minister stated, "Britain has a real chance to lead the world in the offshore wind sector and is being supported by Government. Samsung Heavy Industries' decision to undertake the testing of its new multi-megawatt offshore wind turbine at Narec?s pioneering test facility proves the benefits the facility can offer industry and demonstrates the opportunity for growth and jobs in the offshore sector."
SHI's nacelle will be used to commission the Narec test center. The SHI equipment will be performance tested under simulated offshore wind conditions over a six-month test period.
The Narec testing facility is funded in part by Government and industry through the Energy Technologies Institute. The test rig can conduct performance, endurance and compressed life testing of complete nacelles up to 15 MW rating. It will verify new designs under simulated lifetime operating conditions and extreme events, such as storm conditions and electrical failures.
