Babcock & Wilcox Accelerate Search for Investors in Small Modular Reactor Development

LCG, November 14, 2013--Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) announced its decision to accelerate the search for additional equity partners for its mPower small modular reactor (SMR) program. The goal is to add new partners ready to fully participate in the mPower SMR licensing and other pre-construction activities to deploy the initial mPower Plant by 2022, which is the schedule for the mPower America Project with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

In April, B&W announced that its subsidiary, Babcock & Wilcox mPower, Inc. (B&W mPower), and the DOE signed a Cooperative Agreement for funding from the DOE's SMR Licensing Technical Support Program to support the development and licensing of B&W's mPower technology.

B&W's mPower technology is based upon a 180-MW, integral pressurized water reactor design that uses a fully underground containment structure. With the Cooperative Agreement, the DOE provided approximately $79 million to the B&W mPower program. The DOE allocated an additional $20.5 million in August to the mPower program.

The mPower America team is comprised of B&W, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and Generation mPower. B&W mPower and Bechtel (who together formed Generation mPower LLC) provide licensing and engineering support for the mPower America Project.
