Construction Complete on South Kent Wind Project in Ontario
LCG, April 16, 2014-Samsung Renewable Energy, Inc. (Samsung) and Pattern Energy Group Inc. (Pattern Energy) yesterday announced that construction of the South Kent Wind project is complete and that the wind farm is now operational. The project is the largest wind farm in Canada. The electric generating capacity of the project is 270 MW, which is provided by 124 Siemens wind turbines.
The power produced by South Kent Wind is under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Ontario Power Authority (OPA). The new generating capacity is needed to compensate for the continued retirement of coal-fired generation in Ontario.
The CEO of Pattern Energy stated, "South Kent Wind is our first in a series of wind projects in Ontario and we're proud it has been delivered on time and within budget, despite a very harsh winter.???
Pattern Energy and Samsung are developing and constructing in Ontario three other wind projects: the 150-MW Grand Renewable Energy Park, the 180-MW Armow Wind Project, and the 270-MW K2 Wind Project. These projects, together with South Kent Wind, will provide a total of 870 MW of wind capacity in Ontario.
