Interior Department Announces Approval of 200-MW Moapa Solar Energy Center Project in Nevada

LCG, May 9, 2014-The Secretary of the Interior Wednesday announced the approval of the 200-MW Moapa Solar Energy Center Project on tribal trust land in Nevada and that nine federally recognized tribes have been awarded Tribal Energy Development Capacity grants totaling over $700,000.

The Office of Indian Energy Policy and Programs press release stated the Record of Decision for the Moapa Band of Paiute Indians' project approves the construction, operation and maintenance of a photovoltaic (PV) solar power generation facility on an 850-acre site on the Moapa River Indian Reservation that is located approximately 20 miles northeast of Las Vegas.

The Secretary stated, "Today's announcement reflects the Obama Administration's steadfast commitment to work with Indian Country leaders to promote strong, prosperous and resilient tribal economies and communities. This solar project and these grants also deliver on the President's Climate Action Plan goals to spur important investments and jobs in tribal communities that can be leveraged to address some of the impacts from climate change that threaten tribal lands, waters and ways of life. The Moapa solar project will generate enough electricity to power 60,000 homes and will create hundreds of jobs and additional income for the tribe."

NV Energy recently submitted plans to the Nevada Public Utilities Commission that include the acquisition of the 200-MW solar plant and the closure of three of four coal-fired units at the nearby Reid Gardner Generating Station. Upon approval from the Commission, construction is expected to start shortly on the solar project, and NV Energy would acquire the completed facility in October 2016.

Construction on the 250-MW Moapa Southern Paiute Solar Project commenced in late March. That project, located on 2,000 acres of the Moapa River Indian Reservation just north of Las Vegas, Nevada, is scheduled to be fully operational at the end of 2015. The project owner is Moapa Southern Paiute Solar, LLC (a subsidiary of First Solar Electric, LLC). The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) has 25-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the electricity produced by the energy facility.
