Alliant Energy Issues RPF for 600 MW of Generation in Wisconsin

LCG, June 5, 2014-Alliant Energy's Wisconsin utility issued a request for proposals (RFP) Monday for energy and up to 600 MW of capacity for its customers, beginning in 2019. The additional generation resource is being requested to replace older and less efficient units, including coal-fired units expected to be retired, as well as the potential retirement of aging gas-fired peaking units. Alliant Energy's stated objective is to provide customers with stable power supply that incorporates fuel diversity and that supports economic growth.

The President of Alliant Energy's Wisconsin utility, Wisconsin Power and Light Company, stated, "We are actively evaluating what future mix of fuel sources makes the most sense for our customers, the environment and our company. We believe it is in the best interest of our customers to have flexibility in the power we generate or purchase. To achieve this, we expect natural gas and wind to become a larger part of our energy portfolio."

The RFP solicits ownership and/or long-term Purchased Power Agreement (PPA) proposals for new or existing resources, or access to a portion of the output of a system of resources, to supply all or a portion of its long-term electric capacity and energy needs.

The RFP issued today is one option. Alliant Energy is also considering constructing or acquiring a power plant, converting a current one, or purchasing power from another source.

Yesterday, Alliant Energy?s Iowa utility announced that it has received all of the necessary regulatory approvals and permits to issue a Full Notice to Proceed (FNTP) for construction of the company?s 650 MW combined-cycle, natural gas-fired Marshalltown Generating Station (MGS). The project site is in Marshalltown, Iowa.

Alliant Energy's Senior Vice President of Generation stated, "Construction of MGS is a key part of our company?s long-term energy resource plan that further balances our energy supply while reducing emissions."
