Boundary Dam CCS Project Begins Operations

LCG, October 7, 2014-SaskPower announced Thursday the official opening of its Boundary Dam Power Station, a coal-fired, 110-MW unit now equipped to capture 90 percent of the carbon dioxide produced during combustion. The project, located in Estevan, Sakatchewan, is the largest commercial-scale, carbon capture and storage (CCS) facility in the world and will capture up to a million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.

At the Boundary Dam Power Station, the captured carbon dioxide will be compressed and transported via a 40-mile pipeline to the Weyburn oilfield, where it will be used for enhanced oil recovery (EOR). The carbon dioxide will be purchased by Cenovus under a ten-year agreement for use in its oil fields. Cansolv Technologies Limited, a subsidiary of Shell, developed the amine-based carbon capture process (CANSOLV) used to retrofit Unit 3 at the Boundary Dam Power Station.

Canada's Minister of Natural Resources stated, "Today's announcement - a world first - demonstrates Canada's leadership in developing clean energy technology. Saskatchewan's Boundary Dam project is a prime example of Canadian expertise helping reduce emissions, while growing the economy."

The CEO of the Carbon Capture and Storage Association said, "The launch goes beyond a single project. SaskPower has made significant progress in making a valuable contribution to demonstrating a viable technical, environmental and economic case for the application of CCS to power plants. It is hoped that Boundary Dam will form part of a much needed commercial proof point that the economics make sense."
