GRDA Holds Groundbreaking Ceremony for Combined Cycle Project at Grand River Energy Center in Oklahoma

LCG, January 27, 2015-The Grand River Dam Authority (GRDA) held the groundbreaking ceremony on January 23 for its combined cycle project at the Grand River Energy Center in Chouteau, Oklahoma. The 495-MW, gas-fired generation project is estimated to cost $297 million and is scheduled for completion in early 2017.

The new combined cycle project will utilize the Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Americas (MHPSA) J-Series gas turbine, and the installation of this MHPSA J-series will be the first in the nation. In January 2014, GRDA selected MHPSA to supply the M501J (328-MW) gas turbine, an SRT-50 (167-MW) steam turbine, and a generator to be supplied by Mitsubishi Electric Corporation.

The Grand River Energy Center, located approximately 35 miles east of Tulsa, currently includes two coal-fired units that were installed in the 1980s. GRDA plans to install new emissions control equipment on Unit 2. A number of options are under consideration for Unit 1, including: retiring the unit in 2016, installing emission controls, or converting the unit to burn natural gas, rather than coal.
