Amazon Expands Its Renewable Portfolio with Wind Project in North Carolina
LCG, July 14, 2015-Amazon yesterday announced plans to construct a wind farm in North Carolina to provide power to current and future Amazon Web Services (AWS) data centers. Iberdrola Renewables will build and operate the 208-MW wind project, Amazon Wind Farm US East. The project is scheduled to commence operations in December 2016.
Amazon has stated that it plans "to achieve 100 percent renewable energy usage for the global AWS infrastructure footprint" in the future, with a near-term goal of over 40 percent by the end of 2016. Amazon Wind Farm US East will be Amazon's largest wind farm.
Earlier this year, Amazon agreed to a 13-year power purchase agreement (PPA) from a 150-MW wind project located in Indiana that is scheduled to begin operations late this year. Amazon has also partnered with Community Energy Inc. to build and operate an 80-MW solar project, Amazon Solar Farm US East, in Virginia. The solar project is scheduled to begin commercial operations in October 2016.
The Vice President of Infrastructure at Amazon Web Services stated, "This agreement, and those previously in place, puts AWS on track to surpass our goal of 40 percent renewable energy globally by the end of 2016. We're far from being done. We'll continue pursuing projects that deliver clean energy to the various energy grids that serve AWS data centers, we'll continue working with our power providers to increase their renewable energy quotient, and we'll continue to strongly encourage our partners in government to extend the tax incentives that make it more viable for renewable projects to get off the ground."
