Sempra Announces Expansion Plans for Mesquite Solar Complex in Arizona

LCG, September 16, 2015--Sempra U.S. Gas & Power announced Monday its planned 100-MW expansion of the Mesquite Solar complex in Arizona. Southern California Edison has agreed to purchase all of the power generated from the expansion under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA), which is subject to approval by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The project, Mesquite Solar 2, is scheduled to be completed in late 2016.

The Mesquite Solar complex is located on a 4,000-acre site approximately 60 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona. Construction on Mesquite Solar 2 is scheduled to commence this fall. The first phase of the project, Mesquite Solar 1, is a 150-MW photovoltaic (PV) facility that is a joint venture between Sempra and Consolidated Edison Development. The initial phase began commercial operation in January in 2013 and is equipped with 800,000 Suntech multi-crystalline solar panels using Pluto cell technology. The output is purchased by Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) under a 20-year PPA. The third phase, Mesquite Solar 3, was announced by Sempra Energy last month and will be a 150-MW expansion scheduled to be completed by the end of 2016. The Mesquite Solar 3 project output will be delivered to 14 Navy and Marine Corps installations in California. By 2017, the total installed capacity of the Mesquite Solar complex will be 400 MW.

The president of renewables for Sempra U.S. Gas & Power stated, "We are pleased to support Southern California Edison's commitment to diversify its growing renewable energy portfolio through the development of Mesquite Solar 2. The expansion of our landmark Mesquite Solar complex reflects the progressive vision and leadership by the state of Arizona and Maricopa County, and we look forward to delivering a new supply of clean, emission-free energy to California consumers."
