Samsung and Pattern Development Announce Construction Complete at 180 MW Armow Wind Power Facility in Ontario
LCG, February 2, 2016--Samsung Renewable Energy, Inc. (Samsung) and Pattern Energy Group LP ("Pattern Development") yesterday announced that construction of the 180-MW Armow Wind power facility is complete and that the facility is now fully operational. The Armow Wind power facility now operates under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO).
The project included a 14-month construction period, with many materials supplied locally. The towers for the 91 Siemens 2.3 MW wind turbines were made in Windsor and the 273 blades were manufactured in Tillsonburg by more than 750 Ontario workers.
The Vice President, Wind Power & Renewables, Siemens Canada Limited stated, "Congratulations to our partners on the completion of the Armow Wind farm. Siemens is proud to be a key supplier for our partners on another successful wind project in Ontario. With locally produced steel, towers and blades, Armow Wind is another great example of the positive economic impact the wind power industry has on the Province of Ontario and is a progressive step towards environmental sustainability."
The Armow Wind Project will be followed by a number of new wind farms in the area. The IESO released its 18-month outlook for the reliability and operability of the Ontario Electric System in December, and the outlook estimates 1,850 MW of new supply, including 1,300 MW of wind, 300 MW of gas and 240 MW of solar generation that will be added to the province's transmission grid over the Outlook period (June 2017). By the end of the period, the amount of grid-connected wind and solar generation is expected to increase to about 4,550 MW and 380 MW, respectively.
The IESO's outlook for the reliability of Ontario's electricity system remains positive for the next 18 months, with adequate generation and transmission to supply Ontario's demand.
