Southern Power and Turner Renewables Acquire 20-MW Solar Project in California
LCG, February 17, 2016--Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power and Turner Renewable Energy Monday announced the joint acquisition of the 20-MW Calipatria Solar Facility from Solar Frontier Americas. Project construction began in August 2015, and commercial operation is scheduled for this quarter. The facility has a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with San Diego Gas & Electric Company (SDG&E). The project is aligned with Southern Power's business strategy of growing its wholesale business through the acquisition and construction of generating assets substantially covered by long-term contracts.
The Calipatria Solar Facility site is located in southeast California on approximately 160 acres in Imperial County. The project plans include the use of approximately 130,000 CIS (copper, indium, selenium) modules mounted on single-axis trackers.
Southern Company's Chairman, President and CEO stated, "The acquisition of the Calipatria Solar Facility underscores Southern Power's leadership in helping create America's energy future. Through strategic partnerships, including with Turner Renewable Energy, we are continuing our tremendous growth as a national renewable energy leader."
Ted Turner, owner of Turner Renewable Energy, teamed with Southern Company through a subsidiary in January 2010 to form a strategic alliance to pursue the development of renewable energy projects in the United States. The Calipatria project brings the partnership's overall solar capacity to more than 340 MW operating or under development.
The Calipatria Solar Facility will support SDG&E's efforts to achieve its renewable energy goals. The State of California has a Renewables Portfolio Standard (RPS) that was established by legislation enacted in 2002. Subsequent amendments now set RPS requirements for California's electric utilities, including SDG&E, to have 50 percent of their retail sales derived from eligible renewable energy resources in 2030 and all subsequent years. Interim RPS goals include 25 percent of retail sales by the end of this year.
