FPL Commissions 1,277-MW Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center

LCG, April 13, 2016--Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) yesterday formally commissioned its natural gas-fired Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center, which commenced commercial operation on April 1. FPL invested approximately $1.2 billion in the new, 1,277-MW electric generating facility.

The new combined-cycle facility is the third in a series of such facilities developed by FPL that are located at old power plant sites, where 1960s-era fossil plants have been demolished and replaced with modern, gas-fueled equipment that is both dramatically more fuel efficient and lower in emissions. FPL's other two new plants are at Riviera Beach, which commenced service in 2014, and Cape Canaveral, which began service in 2012.

Siemens supplied three of its SGT6-8000H gas turbines to each of the three projects. The H-class gas turbines, constructed at Siemens' manufacturing center in North Carolina, each deliver an electrical generating capacity of approximately 274 MW.

The President and CEO of FPL stated, "The Port Everglades Next Generation Clean Energy Center is yet another demonstration of our commitment to dramatically reducing our dependence on foreign oil, while at the same time, delivering clean, reliable and affordable energy for our customers."

Looking ahead, the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC) approved the need for FPL's proposed 1,633-MW Okeechobee Clean Energy Center in January of this year. The natural gas-fired electric generating facility is scheduled to commence operations in mid-2019 to serve the growing electric load in Florida. The power plant will be built on company-owned property in northeastern Okeechobee County, Florida. The estimated cost of this combined-cycle facility is $1.3 billion. Given timely receipt of necessary approvals and permits, construction will begin in 2017.
