America's First Offshore Wind Farm Nearing Completion

LCG, August 18, 2016--The first offshore wind project in the United States is approaching completion off the coast of Rhode Island. The blades are now installed on four of the five turbines at the Block Island Wind Farm, and construction may be completed within a week. The 30-MW project is scheduled to commence commercial operations in early November.

The Block Island Wind Farm (BIWF) is located approximately 3 miles southeast of Block Island, Rhode Island. The $300 million BIWF project will consist of five, 6-MW wind turbines, a submarine cable interconnecting the turbines, and a submarine cable from the northernmost turbine to an interconnection point on Block Island. The five foundations were installed in 2015. Installation of the four inter-array cables connecting the five wind turbine foundations and the export cable connecting the wind farm to a new substation on Block Island was completed this summer.

Deepwater Wind is the developer of the BIWF project, and the company has more offshore wind projects planned. Last month Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) announced that it had selected Deepwater Wind to install a 90-MW offshore wind farm approximately 30 miles east of Montauk, New York. LIPA's CEO stated that construction could be expedited and commercial operations could commence by the end of 2022.

The Governor of New York stated that the 90-MW project will "help achieve the state's ambitious goal of supplying 50 percent of our electricity from renewable energy by 2030."
