Southern Power Acquires Third Wind Project in Oklahoma from Apex Clean Energy
LCG, August 31, 2016--Southern Company subsidiary Southern Power Monday announced the acquisition of the 147-MW Grant Plains wind project in Oklahoma from the developer, Apex Clean Energy. Construction began early this year, and the facility is scheduled to achieve commercial operation in December 2016.
The Grant Plains wind project is consistent with Southern Power's business strategy of growing its wholesale business through the acquisition and construction of generating assets substantially covered by long-term contracts.
The Grant Plains wind project is located in Grant County and is expected to include 64 wind turbines manufactured by Siemens. Grant Plains will be Southern Power's third wind facility in Oklahoma, all of which were acquired from Apex. The other two wind farms are the adjacent 151-MW Grant Wind facility and the 299-MW Kay Wind facility. When the Grant Plains project is operational, Southern Power will have nearly 600 MW of installed wind generating capacity in Oklahoma.
Southern Power's President and CEO stated, "The acquisition of the Grant Plains wind facility is an important step in strategically growing our renewable energy portfolio. This project aligns with our business model and underscores our commitment to developing wind generation."
