NextEra Energy Resources Commissions Blythe and McCoy Solar Energy Centers in California
LCG, November 14, 2016--NextEra Energy Resources last Thursday commissioned the Blythe and McCoy Solar Energy Centers, located in southeastern California. The adjacent projects use solar photovoltaic (PV) systems that together provide an installed capacity of 485 MW.
"These projects represent a more than $1.2 billion investment in California and a tremendous step forward to help the state meet its renewable energy goals," said the president and CEO of NextEra Energy Resources, which built and will own and operate the projects. "We are very pleased to bring these solar energy centers online to help serve the state and boost the local economy."
The 235-MW Blythe and 250-MW McCoy Solar Energy Centers will generate carbon-free electricity from solar arrays that cover over 4,000 acres of land in Riverside County, California, where much of the land is managed by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The two projects utilize more than 4 million solar PV panels with trackers to follow the sun each day to maximize energy production. The power output from the projects is under contract with Southern California Edison and Kaiser Permanente.
Kaiser Permanente executed a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with NextEra Energy Resources for 110 MW from the Blythe solar facility. The project supports Kaiser Permanente's goal of becoming carbon net positive by 2025.
Kaiser Permanente's environmental stewardship officer stated, "Climate change is inextricably linked to the health of our communities. Increased rates of asthma and other lung ailments, economically crippling droughts and the trauma of extreme weather events are some examples of the impacts we're already seeing. As a health care provider, we must be a leader in eliminating practices that can negatively impact environmental and human health."
