LCG, March 13, 2026--The Southwest Power Pool (SPP) announced yesterday that leaders from the participating organizations voted unanimously to proceed as planned with expanding its regional transmission organization (RTO) services into the Western Interconnection. SPP sees the decision to proceed as planned as a strong signal of confidence as SPP and its partner utilities prepare for this key milestone, which will occur overnight between March 31 and April 1.

LCG, March 6, 2026--Entergy yesterday announced approximately $5 billion in total savings for 2.3 million customers in Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi resulting from data center customer agreements in those states. Entergy, which completed its first data center customer agreement in 2024, projects the customer savings over the next 20 years and after the regulatory approval or acknowledgement of the public service commissions in those states.

NRC Approves 20-year Extension of Fermi 2 Operating License
LCG, December 16, 2016--The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) today announced its approval of the license renewal request from DTE Electric Company for the Fermi 2 Nuclear Power Plant. The 20-year license extension permits the power plant to continue generating carbon-free electricity through March 20, 2045. The original operating license for Fermi 2 would have expired in March 2025.
The Fermi 2 Nuclear Power Plant is located near Newport, Michigan and includes a boiling-water reactor with a generating capacity of approximately 1,170-MW. The facility achieved full commercial operation in 1988.
The DTE's Senior Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer at Fermi 2 stated, "Continued operation of Fermi 2 ensures a consistent supply of clean, safe energy for our customers. Fermi 2 is an important part of DTE's balanced approach to providing energy to the community."
DTE filed for the license renewal in April 2014, following a two-year effort to develop the technical and environmental studies. Once the application was filed, the NRC conducted in-depth evaluations of the submittal to ensure Fermi 2 will have the programs in place to operate safely until 2045.
DTE's representative stated, "Fermi 2 does, and always will, keep safety as its top priority. This was a multi-year process all for one reason: we and the NRC wanted to make sure Fermi 2 can continue to operate safely well into the future."
According to the NRC, renewal of Fermi 2's operating license brings to 87 the number of commercial nuclear power reactors with renewed licenses (three of those have since permanently shut down). Applications for an additional eight renewals are currently under review by the NRC.
In June 2015, the NRC approved a combined license (COL) to construct and operate a new reactor, Fermi Unit 3, at DTE's Fermi nuclear site. Fermi Unit 3 was the fifth new reactor to complete the NRC's combined license (COL) process. DTE Energy has not committed to building the new reactor and is keeping the option open for long-term planning purposes.
