LCG, March 8, 2018--The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) recorded an all-time peak percentage of demand served by solar energy facilities on Sunday, achieving a record 49.95 percent at 12:58 p.m. The prior peak record was 47.2 percent set on May 14, 2017. The CAISO set another record on Monday, March 5, when a new peak solar production rose to 10,411 MW at 10:18 a.m. The prior record was 9,913 MW set on June 17, 2017.
A senior public information officer at CAISO stated, "The record is a result of a cool, sunny day....Because it was a weekend, and the weather was mild, the minimum load was relatively low, around 18,800 megawatts."
