Southwest Power Pool Sets Wind Penetration Record of 62.13 Percent

LCG, April 4, 2018--Southwest Power Pool (SPP) achieved a record wind penetration and record renewable penetration levels in the early morning on March 31. According to SPP, the wind generation was approximately 14.5 GW, or 62.13 percent, at 1:54 a.m. Combined with nuclear output, the renewable generation resources contributed to about 64.7% of the total load.

With the record setting wind generation, the five-minute SPP North Hub real-time locational marginal prices (LMP) fell to about $2.25/MWh at 1:55 a.m. in the real-time market, while SPP South Hub LMP dropped to negative $10/MWh.

The all-time high wind generation record was set at 15,690 MW in December, serving 51 percent of total load at that time.

The prior wind record was set on March 17, when wind penetration hit as high as 60.56 percent of the total load in the early morning hours. SPP also set a wind penetration record of 58.1 percent earlier in March.
