First Westinghouse AP1000 Plant Sanmen 1 Begins Synchronization to Electrical Grid

LCG, July 3, 2018--Westinghouse Electric Company and its customers, China State Nuclear Power Technology Corporation (SNPTC) and CNNC Sanmen Nuclear Power Company Limited (SMNPC) announced on June 30 that the world's first AP1000 nuclear power plant located in Sanmen, Zhejiang Province, China, has begun initial connection to the electrical grid and has begun generating electricity.

The President and Chief Executive Officer of Westinghouse stated, "Today, we witness our first AP1000 plant, Sanmen 1, began its process of generating electricity and providing our customers in China with safe, reliable and clean energy. This milestone would not have been possible without the constant collaboration and partnership with our China customer."

Sanmen 1 has an electric generating capacity of 1,117 MW. It is the first of a fleet of four new AP1000 plants in eastern China and is expected to provide carbon-free electricity over the next 60+ years. These projects include two units in Sanmen, Zhejiang Province, China, and two units in Haiyang, Shandong Province, China. Westinghouse currently has a total of six AP1000 nuclear power plants progressing through construction, testing and start-up, and Westinghouse is providing the design, critical equipment, training and testing for each of the six AP1000 units.

In the U.S., there are two Westinghouse AP1000 units under construction in Georgia at Plant Vogtle, where two existing reactors have been generating carbon-free power for over 25 years. The in-service dates for the new units, Units 3 and 4, are November 2021 and November 2022, respectively.

Plant Vogtle is owned by Southern Company subsidiary, Georgia Power, together with co-owners Oglethorpe Power Corporation, the Municipal Electric Authority of Georgia and Dalton Utilities.
