AEP to Accelerate Closure of Conesville Plant in Ohio

LCG, October 11, 2018--American Electric Power (AEP) announced plans to retire its coal-fired Conesville electric generating facility in Ohio by May 31, 2020, two years ahead of the previously planned schedule.

The decision to retire the 1,590-MW Conesville plant was driven by operating costs and the results of recent competitive generation auctions. The plant did not clear the PJM Energy Market capacity auction for 2021 to 2022 and only partially cleared the auction for 2020 to 2021.

Units 5 and 6 at the Conesville plant had been scheduled for closure in 2022, but the units will likely be mothballed in May 2019. Unit 4 is rated with the highest capacity (780 MW) at the plant and is expected to continue operations until May 31, 2020.
